N4 Vocabulary Practice With Sentences and Quiz

2026-09-19Kind Japanese

N4 vocabulary practice works best when you learn words inside short, usable sentences, then review your mistakes by meaning, grammar shape, and situation. At N4, many learners already know individual words, but they still hesitate when choosing the right word in a real sentence.

This guide gives you a compact original practice set, answer explanations, and a review routine you can reuse. It is not an official JLPT test. The JLPT checks language knowledge, reading, and listening, so use official JLPT information and materials when you need exact exam format. For extra level-based study planning, you may also find Kind Japanese’s JLPT Practice Questions by Level: Free Guide useful.

How to Practice N4 Vocabulary

Practice N4 vocabulary by moving from recognition to production: first understand the word, then choose it in a sentence, then say your own sentence aloud. Reading a word list once is not enough, because N4 words often change meaning depending on particles, tense, and the situation.

A strong routine can be simple:

  1. Read the word and meaning.
  2. Say the romaji once only if you need pronunciation support.
  3. Read the Japanese sentence aloud.
  4. Cover the English and explain the sentence in your own words.
  5. Make one new sentence about your life.
  6. Review mistakes the next day.

From a teacher’s perspective, learners often need feedback not because they “do not know” the word, but because they use a dictionary meaning too directly. For example, a learner may know “necessary,” but still be unsure whether to say “necessary for me,” “need to do,” or “I need a thing.” That is where sentence-based practice helps.

Kind Japanese’s standard one-on-one lessons are 25 minutes over LINE, so a focused vocabulary session can use a tight flow: quick warm-up, one target word group, short speaking task, correction, and one final sentence the learner can say more naturally. If you study with a teacher, bring the words you confuse, not only the words you already remember.

Core N4 Vocabulary to Use Today

Use these words as active vocabulary, not just recognition vocabulary. The table gives you the core reference for the quiz and examples below.

N4 vocabulary is useful when you can connect it to daily actions. Here are five example sentences in context.

明日までに返事が必要です。
Ashita made ni henji ga hitsuyō desu.
A reply is needed by tomorrow.

電車に間に合いました。
Densha ni maniaimashita.
I made it in time for the train.

今、駅へ行く途中です。
Ima, eki e iku tochū desu.
I am on my way to the station.

先生に勉強の方法を相談します。
Sensei ni benkyō no hōhō o sōdan shimasu.
I will consult the teacher about my study method.

予約の時間に遅れました。
Yoyaku no jikan ni okuremashita.
I was late for the appointment time.

A short cultural note: in Japanese, softer wording is often preferred when asking for help or correction. For example, ちょっと (chotto, a little; slightly) can make a request sound less abrupt, but it does not automatically make every sentence polite. Pair it with the right verb form and situation.

Answers and Review Notes

Check the answers by asking, “What does the word mean here, and what grammar shape does it need?” Do not only count correct and incorrect answers.

  1. A. 返事
    明日までに返事が必要です。
Ashita made ni henji ga hitsuyō desu.
A reply is needed by tomorrow.
返事 is a noun, so it fits naturally before が必要です.
  2. B. 間に合う
    電車に間に合うように、急いでください。
Densha ni maniau yō ni, isoide kudasai.
Please hurry so we can make the train.
間に合う often pairs with に for the thing or deadline you make in time.
  3. A. 途中
    今、駅へ行く途中です。
Ima, eki e iku tochū desu.
I am on my way to the station.
途中 works after a verb phrase such as “going to the station.”
  4. A. 相談します
    友だちに旅行の予定を相談します。
Tomodachi ni ryokō no yotei o sōdan shimasu.
I will discuss the travel plan with my friend.
相談する means to consult or discuss with someone, usually to get advice or decide something.
  5. A. 忘れ
    パスポートを忘れないでください。
    Pasupōto o wasurenaide kudasai.
Please do not forget your passport.
The verb form changes from 忘れる to 忘れないでください for “please do not forget.”
  6. A. 便利
    このアプリはとても便利です。
Kono apuri wa totemo benri desu.
    This app is very convenient.
便利です describes a useful tool, place, system, or method.

Your review should focus on the wrong-answer type:

  • Meaning mistake: You chose a word with the wrong meaning.
  • Grammar mistake: You knew the meaning, but the sentence shape did not fit.
  • Particle mistake: You missed に, を, が, or another connector.
  • Situation mistake: The word was possible in a dictionary, but unnatural in context.
  • Pronunciation mistake: You could read the word silently but not say it smoothly.

After each quiz, write three short review lines:

  • “I confused ___ with ___.”
  • “The natural pattern is ___.”
  • “My own sentence is ___.”

Common Mistakes

Learners often remember N4 vocabulary as English labels, then use the words too broadly. The fix is to learn one natural sentence pattern with each word.

Using 相談する for any kind of talking.
相談する means to consult or discuss something with someone, usually because you want advice, a decision, or help. It is not the best word for casual chatting. A teacher may ask, “Are you just talking, or are you asking for advice?” That question quickly clarifies the word choice.

Using 必要です without a clear noun or action.
必要です means something is necessary. It works smoothly with nouns, such as “a reply is necessary,” but learners often need more practice when the idea is “I need to do something.” At N4, keep your sentences short and make the necessary item clear.

Forgetting that 間に合う is about a deadline or target time.
間に合う is not just “arrive.” It means you make it in time for something. It often appears with trains, meetings, appointments, deadlines, or class times. If there is no time target, another verb may be more natural.

Reading 急いでください incorrectly.
急いでください is isoide kudasai, meaning “please hurry.” The sound changes from the dictionary form, so saying the phrase aloud is part of real vocabulary practice.

Reviewing only the words you got right.
Correct answers feel good, but wrong answers are more useful. If you missed a quiz item, make one new sentence with the correct word and one sentence with the word you wrongly chose. The contrast helps memory.

FAQ

How many N4 vocabulary words should I study each day?

A realistic target is fewer words with better sentence practice. Instead of memorizing a large list passively, choose five to ten N4 vocabulary items, read them aloud, make sentences, and review yesterday’s mistakes. Consistency matters more than a dramatic one-day study session.

Is this quiz the same as the JLPT N4 test?

No. This is an original miniature practice quiz for vocabulary in sentences. The real JLPT N4 checks language knowledge, reading, and listening in its official format. Use official information and past-style materials for test readiness, then use exercises like this to strengthen recall.

Should I memorize romaji for N4 vocabulary?

Romaji can help you confirm pronunciation, but it should not become your main reading system. At N4, gradually rely more on kana and kanji. Use romaji as a temporary support, then cover it and try reading the Japanese sentence directly.

What is the best way to review wrong answers?

Write the full correct sentence, mark why your answer was wrong, and make one personal sentence using the same word. If possible, say it aloud to a teacher or study partner. N4 vocabulary becomes usable when you can produce it, not only recognize it.
